About Kirkjubæjarklaustur

South Iceland’s welcoming heaven for all kinds of travellers and nature lovers

Situated between Iceland’s two most famous glaciers, Vatnajökull and Mýrdalsjökull, Kirkjubaejarklaustur and the surrounding area are part of Katla UNESCO Geopark near the Vatnajökull National Park Visitor Center and overlooking the Skaftá river.

Natural wonders abound in the area surrounding Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Between Vík and Kirkjubaejarklaustur is the Eldhraun lava field which is covered in thick green moss and covers 565 square km (220 square mi). It was formed as a result of the Lakagígar eruption of 1783 which also had a hand in shaping the nearby striking geological wonder that is the Laki Craters.

Other geological features include Systrastapi or “Sister’s Rock” and Fjaðrárgljúfur, an approximately two kilometer long 100 meters deep canyon in which the river Fjaðrá flows, coming from mountains and down the western side of the canyon in a beautiful waterfall.

Kirkjubaejarklaustur is an ideal escape for those looking to get out of Reykjavik and into nature and is also the home of our 4-star boutique hotel, Hótel Klaustur.

Due to its location in South Iceland, on the famous Ring Road, staying at our hotel puts you near many hiking trails and natural highlights. It’s a great half-way stop between Reykjavik and Jökulsárlón where one can access important services, such as a fuel station, bank, post office and supermarket, not to mention that Kirkjubaejarklaustur is known to have the best weather in Iceland.
