Systrafoss & Systravatn
Systravatn (“The Lake of the Sisters”) is located at the edge of the mountaintop above Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The nuns of the convent often went up to the lake to bathe and that is where the lake’s name comes from. From the lake, the river Fossá falls down the gorge Fossárgil, forming Systrafoss (“The Waterfall of the Sisters”). The walk up the mountainside to Systravatn takes only about 20 minutes and from the top the view is truly spectacular.
