Church floor
The very interesting “Church floor” is only a short walk east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The Church floor is composed of basalt columns covering about 80 square meters. Only the tops of the columns are visible, giving the appearance of a floor.
A church has actually never stood on those grounds but the floor looks man-made. The columns have been shaped and eroded naturally through the years by tide and glacial melts which have given them their unique look. Today the Church Floor is a protected national monument.
